Let's Get Computers!

Hello parent’s of Mr. Jon Bowman’s 10th Grade World History Class,
I’m am writing you all to encourage you to get moving and join us in our attempt to gain access to more computer technology. Our plan is to fundraise specifically to get more computers in our class with the end result being lap tops for every student or (worst case) every other student in class. We hope that you will see the benefits of having this technology in your child’s hands as soon as possible and embark upon a strong effort to get it.
Now I know there are plenty of you who think that computers just allow the children to ‘goof around’ and not take things seriously in class, but that is not the case. Believe me, I had some of the same misgivings so you are not alone, but the fact is that giving students classroom access to the wealth of information provided on the internet is of critical importance. Besides, you should all know by now that ‘goofing around’ is not going to happen in my class anyways.
With use of computers, I can add essential components to my lesson plans, such as visual and audio aids, reading assignments and allow the students to do research activities. For example, lets say we are learning about the Second World War...I can direct the students to view video of Roosevelt giving his December 8th Speech to congress, rather than just telling them it happened, without having to stop the whole class, turn out the light and waste valuable time with DVDs and VHS tapes. There is much more useful material on the internet than there is in our pitiful text books, shouldn’t it be available to your children?
I hope that you will all at least look into what this technology has done for schools and do your own research. I could post up a bunch of links to websites that say how great computers in the classroom are, but of course that’s all going to be biased. Do your own research, talk to your children and see for yourself. The Chinese, Europeans, Japanese and other states (Maine comes to mind) are all doing this, let’s not fall behind them!
So, let's start the discussion and I hope to hear from you all.
Jon Bowman
